The top two US officials overseeing the American occupation of Iraq claimed that there was strong evidence that non-Iraqis were behind a wave of violence that most recently took more than 140 lives in two coordinated attacks in Iraq. Gen. John Abizaid, the commander of American forces in Iraq, said on Capitol Hill that American officials had uncovered evidence linking a Jordanian-born Sunni militant to the bombings. In Baghdad, Paul Bremer, the chief American administrator in Iraq, said that the United States had committed $60 million to help seal Iraq`s borders against foreign terrorists that American officials believe are largely responsible for terrorism attacks there. Following its deliberations, the watchdog agency issued a stern warning to the president, telling him not to meddle in the coming National Assembly elections.
