Government to create 2 million new jobs over 5 years The Korea Times reports the government has set a goal of creating two million jobs over the next five years in a bid to curb soaring unemployment rates. More than 80,000 new jobs will be added to the payrolls of the public sector this year alone. Government officials expect a total of 1.5 million jobs to be created by 2008 as long as the economy grows by 5 percent annually. Officials said yesterday a single percentage point hike in gross domestic product would create about 60,000 new jobs. Released teenager suspected of killing two elementary school students. Police investigating the murder of two elementary school students in Bucheon, Gyeonggi province, released a 16-year-old boy yesterday who had been taken into custody in connection with the case. Though they claimed the boy had confessed to the crime, police concluded there was no real evidence linking him to the killings. Last month, two schoolboys were found dead on a mountainside in Bucheon. The Joong-Ang Ilbo reports the boy`s parents plan to charge the police with coercive investigative practices and defamation. Additional 10 billion won, former president Chun Doo Hwan’s slush funds The Korea Herald reports the prosecution recently found an additional 10 billion won that it alleges is part of the slush funds former President Chun Doo-hwan is believed to have concealed, quoting a senior prosecutor yesterday. About 60 million won of that amount, which was managed by three of Chun`s aides, was used to repair the former president`s house and purchase New Year`s cards for his acquaintances, prosecutor Ahn Dae-hee alleged. Two of the three aides left for the United States in October, when the prosecution undertook a probe of suspicious funds connected with Chun`s second son. Big changes to the center of Seoul The Seoul Metropolitan Government has announced a plan to broaden pedestrian walkways and create more green spaces along the main avenue from the gate of Gyeongbok Palace to Seoul Station.
