Poultry products from Thailand have been banned. The deadly bird flu that has now infected humans in Vietnam and Thailand is spreading throughout Southeast Asia. The disease broke out almost simultaneously in six Asian countries including Thailand, Cambodia, Japan, Taiwan, Vietnam and South Korea. Six Vietnamese and two Thais have died from the virus so far. South Korea has banned imports of all poultry products from Thailand after the Thai government confirmed the death of a man suspected of contracting avian flu. The measure came in the wake of import bans by other countries such as Japan and the European Union, the number one and two customers of Thai chicken. Bans have also been imposed by Singapore, Taiwan, Malaysia and Bangladesh. Korean quarantine authorities had stepped up surveillance of all poultry products from Thailand. Korea automakers hope to achieve their target. Korean automakers are hoping to break last year`s record and export more than three million vehicles this year. Five domestic automakers, including Hyundai Motor Co. and GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co., are hoping to ship a total of 3.24 million units in 2004, up 26.6 percent from last year. The figures include vehicles made at overseas plants or those assembled under a knockdown production scheme. If they achieve their target, Korean automakers will achieve the milestone of three million units in annual exports just one year after the figure exceeded the two-million unit mark.
