The meeting follows the visit of a South Korean delegation to the United States that failed to narrow the gap between the two sides’ stances on the size and nature of the planned troop dispatch to Iraq. Seoul conveyed to the U.S. its intention to send 3,000 noncombatant soldiers but the proposal was rejected by Washington, which is pressing for a large contingent with combat troops. Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Soo-hyuck, who returned from the United States leading a delegation to negotiate the troop dispatch issue, said the U.S. has been demanding more troops than offered and the inclusion of combat troops.
